November Festivities

In this weekend’s Friendsgiving frenzy I not only was able to catch up with old friends, I was also able to whip up some insanely delicious goodies. Between a friendsgiving Friday night, the Notre Dame vs. Virginia Tech game on Saturday (it snowed and we lost) and another Friendsgiving Sunday night, it was a cooking extravaganza in my house. Here are some of my dishes from this weekend!

Ina Garten’s Herb Roasted Turkey Breast – Note: I was not able to find a single 6.5 – 7 lb. turkey breast so I made 2 3 lb. ones in the same pan. It was just as good!

Seven Layer Pumpkin Bars…the title says it all.

Crock Pot Chili is the cure for 20 degrees and snow while you’re tailgating.

Although Brown Suga from Lagunitas and Starbucks Christmas Blend coffee with Bailey’s doesn’t hurt either. This is me tailgating in the front seat to get feeling back in my toes and fingers. #classy

Hope everyone had a good weekend!

El Ideas

By far one of the most incredible meals I’ve ever experienced, El Ideas takes the stuffiness out of fine dining and creates an interactive experience with a comfortable setting. Throughout our dinner we were encouraged to get up to interact with other guests and join the cooks in the open kitchen. Below are some pictures of our dishes.

Friendsgiving #1 2016

I’m #blessed that I have a variety of friends circles I’m in, especially when it comes to the holidays. My #squad recently had friendsgiving to celebrate our friendships and the ability to come together before the crazy holiday season. This year was a potluck and I was in charge of THE turkey and a dessert.

I knew that I would be making The Pioneer Woman’s Thanksgiving Turkey and started the process the Friday night by preparing the brine before our Sunday feast. Saturday consisted of putting the turkey in the brine to marinate for 24 hours and the day of was cooking day.

Here is the final product!

As a foodie and an explorer I knew that when my family and I talked about a trip out west 6 months ago, I needed to brush up on where to eat and things to do.

I put my research hat on and took to my regular food websites and blogs to find out the best spots to visit/eat/drink. (see below for my complete list)

Once I compiled a list of my top places to stop, I attempted to make reservations, not realizing that most of the places in San Francisco now require reservations 1-2 months in advance, or are walk in only. I soon had lots of calendar alerts popping up over the course of the summer.

Here is the final list of everywhere we visited, as well as a few other places that I have been to throughout the year on various trips.

Hog Island Oyster Company – Lunch

Hog Island has a few locations, but we chose to eat in the Ferry Building. If you are looking for simple food and good oysters, you can’t beat this place.

Note: No reservations accepted, so try and go at an off time during the week. The weekends almost guarantee a long line.

Other places I recommend in the Ferry Building are Gotts for a burger, Slanted Door for Thai food, and Humphrey Slocombe for ice cream (the Harvey Milk is my favorite!).

Li Po – Drinks

My friend was recommended this dive bar by a friend and it did not disappoint. What I thought was a hole in the wall, is actually a bar that has been endorsed heavily by Anthony Bourdain. Get a Chinese Mai-Tai for a night on the town or a pineapple and Malibu for a more low key night. Note: It’s cash only.

Oriental Pearl – Dinner

If you are looking for traditional Chinese food at a good price point in Chinatown, Oriental Pearl is it. This was a great find recommended by our concierge. Get the sampler platter to start and the Mongolian beef.

Presidio Social Club – Brunch

Presidio used to be an army base and they have completely revamped the barracks and halls into various businesses, restaurants and misc. venues. Definitely off the beaten path, but worth a visit. Our brunch consisted of a variety of foods from many cultures including, Thai Chicken Noodle Soup, Chilaquiles, and Beignets with hot chocolate. With a view of the Presidio area and an outdoor patio, it was the perfect start to our trip.

Redwood Room in the Clift Hotel – Drinks

The entirety of the bar was created from the Redwood trees that Northern California is known for. We grabbed a quick drink and some deep fried blue cheese olives and absorbed the rich room and our surroundings. They have some good happy hour deals, so go there between 4 pm and 6 pm.

Rich Table – Dinner

I saw this restaurant listed on every San Francisco foodie list and had to try it. They are well known for their porcini doughnuts and now I know the secret. They serve them with a bechamel sauce that I proceed to lick out of the bowl. The doughnuts and everything else that we ate was incredible, including soft shell crab, ribeye, salmon tartar and chocolate cake.

*Note that you can only make reservations up to a month in advance, but if you are just seeking out their doughnuts, they have a stand at AT&T park.

Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay – Lunch

We decided to take a day trip down to Half Moon Bay, specifically to the Ritz Carlton, for the perfect lunch with a view. The hotel is situated right on the edge of the shore and is breathtaking. Their main restaurant, The Conservatory, has a wall of windows so make sure to get a spot near one.

We had a simple lunch of quinoa with lemon and Parmesan, pita with hummus and crab salad.

**State Bird Provisions – Dinner **

This was unlike any dining experience I’ve ever had. San Francisco is known for its variety of dim sum restaurants, but SBP was the “gourmet” version. We came here for my dad’s birthday since it is frequently rated the number 1 restaurant on the guides. If you are looking for a unique and entertaining meal, this is it.

Upon looking at their menu initially I couldn’t understand the hype, but when you experience it, it makes sense. They do three seatings each night at 5:30, 7:30 and 9:30 and you have to make reservations two months in advance or wait outside for a few hours before it opens to put your name on the list.

Each seating has a combination of dim sum carts and ordering off the menu, although we learned that the dim sum was so good, we barely ordered from the menu.

Our choices consisted of smoked trout with avocado and potato chips, dashi potatoes, a marinated oyster, lamb sausage with cucumber and tzatziki sauce, chile marinated melon, smoked salmon with heirloom tomatoes, elotes, pork belly, The State Bird, almond muffins with foie gras (yes, yes, yes), and french bread topped with burrata and pepper.

If you haven’t figured out yet, this was my favorite meal in San Francisco.

Tosca Cafe

I originally found this restaurant in the first season of Mind of a Chef (If you haven’t watched it, sit down and binge) and knew with an upcoming trip, I wanted to go here. I went here during a business trip, therefore I ate by myself, which is almost better sometimes because you can really absorb what is happening in the restaurant around you.

I had a root vegetable salad to start and then I had something that made me rethink the way I ate pasta. They had a special of homemade rigatoni with pine nuts, edamame, golden raisins and slow cooked beef. It was incredible and I need to find a way to recreate it at home.

21-Day Fixing

Everybody has new year resolutions and being that we are mid-way through February, I think it’s safe to say that a good majority of those resolutions have already fallen by the wayside. I decided to start my new year this past week. I’ve been traveling a lot for work and haven’t had the time to dedicate to my well-being and overall health.

This past week I decided to start the 21-day fix, a 21 day program that is based on portion control and working out. I was hesitant in the beginning and didn’t know if I would be able to get through the 3 week program. How could anyone workout every single day and not be exhausted all the time? Luckily I’ve found that not only am I motivated to get up every morning and get my workout in, I’m already noticing that I have more energy and am seeing results.

Since I’ve been doing this, I’ve been able to get into the kitchen more and have been cooking up some great things! I’ll be posting throughout the next 2 weeks and can’t wait to see the results!

Fettuccine Alfredo for One

Last night I had a severe craving for Fettuccine Alfredo. Since I have to be in a bathing suit in less than a week, I tried with everything I had not to go through with making this dish, but finally caved knowing that nothing I ate or tried to eat to make up for this creamy, cheesy, carboload dish would come close to the real thing.

However, I didn’t need to make an entire pound of pasta for one person seeing as I don’t plan on eating it for the next 6 nights (alright 3 since I eat more than one portion at a time because it’s just that delicious).

I chose the Williams-Sonoma’s recipe, but instead of making the whole thing, I cut the recipe in half. Not only did it satisfy the craving, it is definitely at the top of the Alfredo recipes that I have tried to make, and as a bonus, I now have leftovers for tonight that I can easily reheat on the stove with a little added cream.

I frequently cut recipes in half if I only plan on eating them for the 1-2 meals. For soups and stews, I tend to make the whole recipe and freeze them in individual quart containers for later.

Here is my dish from last night that I added mushrooms to in order to make myself feel like I at least at some sort of vegetable while indulging.

Current Beauty Buys

I find that every time I go to a department store or some sort of cosmetics shop, I end up finding something that I absolutely have to add into my daily routine. Thus resulting in expanding my morning routine by a few minutes.

Here are my most recent additions that I highly recommend:

Benefit’s Ultra Radiance Facial Re-Hydrating Mist

This mist is everything. I put it on right before I apply my tinted moisturizer to seal in moisture and once again when I finish my makeup application to set everything. Plus, the smell is absolutely addicting. It has a great refreshing cucumber scent.

MAC Cool Neutral Palette

I purchased this palette on a whim (the sales lady sold me on the 25% off deal at the time) and I haven’t stopped using it. It has all of the colors that I wear on a regular basis and I probably won’t need to buy eyeshadow now for a year.

I’m Back!

It’s been a while, but I’m finally back in the blogging world!

This year has been filled with a new job, new friends, trips, and of course lots of food. It’s been a whirlwind, but it’s been fun! Here are some of the recent things I’ve been eating:

Dove’s Luncheonette – Wicker Park

A throwback to the 50′s, this diner hit the spot for brunch a few weeks ago. I went early enough that I didn’t have to wait, but the food and service were great. Below is my enchilada con pollo with an egg added to it. The perfect hangover cure.

As someone who doesn’t like biscuits and gravy I decided to try my friend’s to make sure I wasn’t missing out, but I might be a convert. They had the perfect amount of gravy so as not to completely soak the bread. I have a gravy-phobia and get completely freaked out by the texture, but this one didn’t seem to affect me.

Jam – Logan Square

My new and favorite brunch spot. Where Dove’s is a throwback, this place is a modern brunch place. I’ve heard the line here can get long, so we arrived around 10 am and were able to sit right down. I ate the most perfect quiche. With a soft buttery crust and eggs that were cooked right to the point of being done, this is my new go-to dish. (As an aside: I find that quiche is frequently overcooked and then gets spongy. Ew) I can’t forget to mention the trout stuffed in the middle and the greens with smoked salmon on the side. This dish incorporated all of my favorite things about brunch: bread, eggs and smoked fish. Instead of having bagel and lox, I sprang for the quiche version.

As decadent as it sounds, I felt refreshed after eating instead of wanting to fall into my food coma on my couch as I frequently do after brunch.

Sun Wah Barbecue – Uptown

Run – do not walk – to this restaurant in Uptown and order the Beijing Duck feast where you will experience duck overload, hence the feast. (Make sure you pre-order it when you place your reservation). For $40 you will receive a full Peking duck that is then carved at your table. You can then stuff the carved meat into steamed bao with pickled radish and hoisin sauce. They then take the rest of the duck and cut up the remaining meat into your fried rice and use the carcass to make soup. Enough said.

Till next time…
